Fancy Text for Discord
Your Discord username and About Me don't have to look the same as everyone else's. Here's how to use custom Unicode fonts in your profile, messages, and server nicknames - with examples for every type of user.

Discord lets you bold and italic text in chat with markdown. Wrap something in double asterisks and it's bold. Single asterisks for italic. That's fine for messages, but it doesn't help you anywhere else. Your username, your About Me, your server nickname, your custom status - none of these support markdown formatting.
So how do all those people in your server have fancy-looking names and stylized bios? Unicode.
Unicode is the character encoding standard that includes thousands of characters beyond what your keyboard shows. Among those characters are letters that look like different font styles: ๐ฏ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ, ๐ช๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ค, ๐ฌ๐พ๐ป๐ผ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ, ๐ค๐ฌ๐ฑ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ , โโคโโโโ, หขแตแตหกหก. These aren't formatting that gets stripped out - they're actual characters. They work anywhere you can type text on Discord.
The process takes about 10 seconds: type your text into a font generator, pick the style, copy the result, and paste it into Discord.
How to Use Fancy Fonts on Discord (Step by Step)
Same steps whether you're changing your username, writing a bio, or sending a styled message.
- Open a text generator. Go to PrettyText's fancy text generator in your browser. If you already know the style you want, jump directly to a specific tool like the bold generator, gothic generator, or cursive generator.
- Type your text. Enter whatever you want to style - your display name, bio text, or a message. The generator converts it into multiple font styles instantly.
- Pick a style and copy. Browse through the options and click the copy button next to the one you like.
- Paste into Discord. Open Discord and paste the text wherever you want it - your display name (Settings > Profiles), About Me, a server nickname, or directly in a chat message.
No bots needed. No Nitro subscription required. These are standard Unicode characters that work on Discord Free, Nitro, and every platform Discord runs on.
Discord Username & Display Name Fonts
Your display name is the first thing people see in a server. It shows up in the member list, in message headers, and when someone hovers your profile. A styled display name stands out immediately in a crowded server.
Discord lets you set a global display name and per-server nicknames. Unicode fonts work in both. Here's what to know:
Global display name - Go to Settings > Profiles > Display Name. Paste your styled text here. This shows everywhere unless a server-specific nickname overrides it.
Server nicknames - Right-click your name in a server and choose "Edit Server Profile." You can set a different styled nickname for each server. This is great for matching the aesthetic of different communities.
What works best: Bold sans-serif is the most popular choice for usernames because it's readable at small sizes in the member list. Gothic/fraktur is popular in gaming and alternative communities. Cursive works well for art and creative servers.

Notice the pattern: styled text for the name and key elements, plain text for the details people actually need to read. That contrast makes the profile scannable and aesthetically clean.
About Me Section
Discord's About Me section gives you 190 characters to describe yourself. It shows up when someone clicks your profile. Most people either leave it empty or write plain text. A little styling goes a long way here.
The About Me section supports Unicode fonts, emoji, and even line breaks. You can mix different styles within the same bio for a layered look.

Bold for the title, regular text for the tagline, italic for current status, and small text for the punchline. Four different visual weights in four lines - that's what makes it interesting to look at.
Discord Markdown vs. Unicode Fonts
This confuses a lot of people, so let's clear it up.
Discord markdown uses symbols to format text inside messages:
**bold text** โ bold text
*italic text* โ italic text
~~strikethrough~~ โ strikethrough
__underline__ โ underline
`code` โ code
Markdown only works inside chat messages. It does not work in usernames, display names, About Me, server nicknames, or custom statuses. Discord strips the formatting symbols in those fields.
Unicode fonts are actual characters that look styled. They work everywhere - messages, usernames, bios, nicknames, statuses. Discord doesn't strip them because they're real characters, not formatting syntax.
Here's the practical difference:
| Feature | Discord Markdown | Unicode Fonts |
|---|---|---|
| Chat messages | Yes | Yes |
| Display name | No | Yes |
| About Me | No | Yes |
| Server nickname | No | Yes |
| Custom status | No | Yes |
| Available styles | Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, code | 21+ styles including cursive, gothic, bubble, small text, and more |
For chat messages, you can use either. But for everything else on Discord, Unicode fonts are your only option for styled text.
Best Font Styles for Discord
Different styles work better in different contexts. Here's a quick reference:
| Where | Best Style | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Display Name | Bold Sans | Bold Generator |
| About Me | Cursive | Cursive Generator |
| Server Nickname | Gothic / Fraktur | Gothic Generator |
| Chat Messages | Italic | Italic Generator |
| Status / Bio | Small / Superscript | Small Generator |
| Aesthetic Bios | Bubble Text | Bubble Generator |
Discord Chat Message Fonts
You already have markdown for bold and italic in chat. So why use Unicode fonts in messages? Because Unicode gives you styles that markdown can't - cursive, gothic, bubble, double-struck, small text, and more. And sometimes you want a styled message that stands out differently from standard bold.
Message Examples
Use them sparingly in chat. One styled message in a conversation adds flair. Every message in a different Unicode font gets annoying fast - your server mates will let you know.
Zalgo and Glitch Text in Discord
Zalgo text and glitch text both work in Discord and have a strong following in horror, creepypasta, and alternative aesthetic communities. Zalgo adds stacking diacritical marks that make text look corrupted. Glitch text swaps characters with look-alike symbols from other scripts.
Light zalgo works great for usernames and bios
Heavy zalgo in chat messages can overlap with other messages and make the channel hard to read - most servers will ask you to tone it down
If you're in a community where that aesthetic fits, go for it. Just be aware that heavily corrupted text can trigger automod bots in some servers.
Server-Specific Nicknames
One of Discord's best features for font customization: you can set a different nickname for every server you're in. This means you can match each community's vibe without changing your global identity.
Gaming server? Use gothic/fraktur text for a strong, dark aesthetic. ๐๐๐ฏ๐จ๐๐ซ๐ฆ๐ค๐ฅ๐ฑ hits different than "DarkKnight" in plain text.
Art community? Cursive gives your name a creative, handwritten feel. ๐๐ป๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ป๐ looks like it belongs on a gallery wall.
Tech server? Monospace or double-struck text fits the developer aesthetic. ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฃ feels right at home next to code blocks.
Casual hangout? Bubble text or small text keeps it fun and low-key.
To set a server nickname: right-click your name in the server > Edit Server Profile > change the nickname. Paste your Unicode styled text and save.
Custom Status Fonts
Your Discord custom status shows up next to your name in the member list. It's a small piece of text, but it's visible to everyone in the server. Unicode fonts work here too.
Custom Status Examples
Small/superscript text works particularly well for statuses because it visually distinguishes your status from your username at a glance. The small text generator is perfect for this.
Tips for Using Fancy Fonts on Discord
Keep usernames readable. A styled name that nobody can read defeats the purpose. Stick to bold, cursive, or gothic for names. Avoid heavy zalgo or combining characters that obscure the actual letters.
Test on both desktop and mobile. Discord renders Unicode slightly differently across platforms. Something that looks perfect on your PC might render differently on your friend's phone. Bold, italic, and cursive have the widest cross-platform support.
Don't style everything. If your name is styled, your bio is styled, your status is styled, and every message is styled - nothing stands out anymore. Pick one or two elements to customize and let the rest breathe.
Match the server culture. A professional server for a study group probably isn't the place for zalgo text names. Read the room. More casual and gaming-oriented servers tend to welcome creative usernames. Professional and support servers expect clean, readable names.
Respect server rules. Some servers have rules about nicknames being readable or matching a specific format. Check the server rules before going wild with decorative fonts. Server mods can change your nickname if it violates their guidelines.
Use mirror text for fun. Reversed or mirrored text is a Discord chat staple for jokes and reactions. It's novelty, not something you'd put in your bio - but it's entertaining in the right context.
Common Problems (and Quick Fixes)
Characters show as empty boxes
The viewer's device doesn't have the font files for those Unicode characters. Switch to a more common style. Bold sans-serif and italic have the best cross-platform support. Exotic styles like fullwidth/aesthetic text may not render on older devices.
Name looks different on mobile vs desktop
Each operating system renders Unicode characters using its own system fonts. The character is identical, but the visual appearance varies between Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. This is normal - you can't control it, but the styling is preserved.
Server won't let me change my nickname
Some servers restrict nickname changes. You need the "Change Nickname" permission. If you can't edit your nickname, ask a mod or admin. Alternatively, your global display name still shows through if no server nickname is set.
Bot commands break with Unicode characters
Most Discord bots parse commands by looking for plain text. If you type a bot command in a Unicode font, the bot won't recognize it. Keep bot commands in regular text. Save the fancy fonts for your display name, bio, and casual messages.
Styled text triggers automod
Some automod configurations flag messages with unusual characters. This is more common with zalgo text (the stacking diacritical marks). If your message gets filtered, try a cleaner Unicode style instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use custom fonts on Discord?
Discord doesn't have a built-in font picker, but you can use Unicode text generators like PrettyText to create styled text - bold, cursive, italic, gothic, and more - then paste it into your username, About Me section, messages, and server bios. They work because they're special Unicode characters, not formatting that gets stripped.
What's the difference between Discord markdown and Unicode fonts?
Discord markdown uses symbols like **bold** and *italic* to format text inside messages only. Unicode fonts are actual special characters that look styled everywhere - usernames, bios, server nicknames, and messages. Markdown only works in chat; Unicode works anywhere you can type text.
Do Unicode fonts work in Discord usernames?
Yes, most Unicode styles work in Discord display names and server nicknames. Bold, italic, cursive, and small text all work well. Some very obscure characters may not render on all devices, but the common styles are widely supported.
Why do some fancy characters show as boxes in Discord?
Some Unicode characters require font files that not every device has. If you see empty boxes, the viewer's operating system doesn't support that particular character set. Stick to bold, italic, and cursive for the widest compatibility across Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Can you use zalgo text in Discord?
Yes, zalgo text works in Discord messages, usernames, and bios. But very heavy zalgo can make text hard to read and may annoy other users in chat. Use it sparingly - a light glitch effect is usually enough to get the aesthetic without being disruptive.
